The club management had a conversation with the player, the player deleted the publication
Mainz suspended the winger from training Anwara El Ghazi for a pro-Palestinian post on social networks.
“Mainz releases Anwar El Ghazi from training and games. The suspension is in response to a since-deleted social media post by the 28-year-old on Sunday evening. In it, El-Ghazi took an intolerant position for the club on the conflict in the Middle East. The release was preceded by a detailed discussion between the board of directors and the player.”
“The Club recognizes that there are different points of view on the complex Middle East conflict, which has been going on for several decades. However, Mainz clearly distances itself from the content of the post, as it does not reflect the values of our club.”
El Ghazi became a player for the German club at the end of September. The winger previously left PSV and joined Mainz as a free agent. El Ghazi played in three Bundesliga matches, providing one assist.
Mainz is in penultimate place in the German Championship with two points. In the next match the team will host Bayern on October 21.
