The Italians are third in Group C
Central defender Italian national team Francesco Acerbi shared his thoughts on the team’s chances of getting to the 2024 European Championship after losing to England (1:3) in the match of the eighth round of the qualifying round.
“The first half was good, against England we got into their areas quite easily. We had to try to win and do something more because we had the opportunity. The English are younger and have great players and they showed a lot of humility in the second half, defending very well and we didn’t do that.
Spalletti has coached great teams, he has been working at a high level for many years and gives us strength, he tells us that we have to believe in ourselves and play with the intensity that he wants. After missing out on the last two World Championships, we absolutely need to move on and go to the European Championships. I don’t even want to think about the fact that we might not get to the European Championships. We must defeat North Macedonia and Ukraine,” Acerbi said.
After the defeat from England, the Italian team dropped to third position in Group C. The Italians have 10 points, but they played one match less than Ukraine, which has 13 points.
In the final matches of the qualifying round, Italy will play at home against North Macedonia (November 17) and away against Ukraine (November 20).
