Russia has created a “Commonwealth” league for clubs from the occupied territories of Ukraine

According to a member of the Russian government, the competition will start in March 2024

Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko announced the creation of a football League “Commonwealth”which will include clubs from the so-called Lugansk And Donetsk “people’s republics”, as well as from the occupied territories Zaporozhye And Kherson regions Ukraine.

According to a high-ranking official, the aggressor state has allocated an amount (equivalent, according to the official exchange rate) to $32 million for the restoration of sports infrastructure in the “new regions.”

The Commonwealth League is planned to unite 10 football clubs from the so-called “new constituent entities” of the Russian Federation (temporarily occupied territories since the beginning of the full-scale invasion), and the championship will start in March 2024.

In April of this year, it became known that the occupiers are planning to include football clubs from Crimea in the Russian league.

Earlier, on the basis of the Crimean Football Union, the aggressor country decided to create a separate football championship with the participation of Crimean clubs, as well as representatives of other partially occupied Ukrainian regions.

Let us recall that earlier in October the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) included in its composition the Olympic councils of the so-called “LPR” and “DPR”, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye “Olympic councils”. The International Olympic Committee reacted promptly to this and suspended the activities of the region.

In the early hours of February 24, Russia launched rocket and air strikes on most Ukrainian cities and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The Russian war against Ukraine has continued for the 603rd day.
