Soccer club “Rome “made a statement in support of the midfielder Nikola Zalevski and attacker Stefana El Shaarawy who were previously suspected of being involved in a football betting affair in Italy.
Last week, journalist Fabrizio Corona accused Zalewski and El-Shaarawy of illegal betting, but the information was not later confirmed. Zalewski intends to sue the journalist for defamation.
“In connection with the rumors that have spread in recent days about the involvement of some club players in the investigation into the football betting affair, Roma expresses its full support for Nikola Zalewski and Stefan El Shaarawy. They have been victims of repeated speculation which has unfairly damaged their image. The club has full confidence in Nicola and Stefan, who had nothing to do with this matter, the statement said.
Earlier, Italian media reported that at least 10 football players and 5-6 agents were involved in the betting scandal. According to other sources, around 50 people appear in the story. On Tuesday, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced that Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli had been suspended from football for 12 months, five of which were commuted, and fined 12,500 euros for betting on sites illegal. In addition, Newcastle’s English player, Sandro Tonali, risks a long disqualification.
