Olympique de Marseille and Jorge Sampaoli announce the joint decision to terminate the contract. Jorge Sampaoli is the first coach to whom Pablo Longoria wanted to entrust the destiny of the first team in February 2021. The Argentine coach took over the team’s reins in a particular context during the 2019/20 season.

From his first day in Marseille, he was fully invested in establishing a philosophy of play and a conquering state of mind corresponding to the values of Olympique de Marseille. It is, therefore, with emotion that the club and Jorge Sampaoli announce the joint decision to end the collaboration. OM would like to sincerely and warmly thank the work of Jorge Sampaoli. After 16 months of collaboration, this work allowed the club to take a step forward in the construction of its new sports project and to qualify directly for the group stage of the Champions League.

We are pleased with the progress made and the emotions experienced together, but after long reflection, the two parties, acting in the interests of the Olympique de Marseille project, have agreed to put an end to this phase. The club will now begin a new cycle that will form part of the continuity of the sports policy implemented by President Pablo Longoria since his arrival.”

Since his arrival at the helm of the French team, Sampaoli has been requesting reinforcements from the board, which, in some cases, has responded and in others not. According to information from some French press vehicles, this was one of the main reasons between the tensions between the two parties. Olympique already has new targets set to take charge, but it doesn’t seem to have advanced in any negotiations.
