“Fluminense FC repudiates the disastrous, shameful and biased refereeing conducted by Paulo César Zanovelli in this Thursday’s game at Maracanã. The referee used dubious criteria and directly influenced the result of the match by awarding a non-existent penalty in favor of Corinthians and failing to award two other penalties, these times existing, to Fluminense. The mistakes made tonight – which provoked revolt among the athletes and the fans – only demonstrate the long road to be covered until the level of refereeing excellence necessary to guarantee a good performance in Brazilian football is reached. Fluminense hopes that the CBF Arbitration Commission will apply the appropriate punishments to the referee panel for this match so that cases like this do not happen again.”
