This Monday the competition begins men’s football at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. It is one of the disciplines that will take place outside the capital. Valparaíso and Viña del Mar will host the men’s and women’s matches, looking to reach the podium and secure medals. There are eight teams in the Under 23 category (with the possibility of including three seniors), divided into two groups of four. The top two from each zone advance to the semi-finals.

The first match will feature a well-known local personality. For group B, the selected Honduras will face Colombia at the Elías Figueroa stadium in Valparaíso (1:00 p.m.). At the helm of the catrachos is Bernardo Redín, the historical technical assistant of Reinaldo Rueda, Who was he assistant to the Chilean team during the Colombian’s time, between 2018 and 2020. Right arm of “Triple R”, the former player took the reins of Sub 23 for the Pan-American tournament.

Redín took over from Luis Alvarado, who led the under-20 team at this year’s World Cup in Argentina, in which Honduras finished bottom of Group F (with one point), behind Gambia, South Korea and France. You have to be careful because H won a silver medal in men’s football at Lima 2019. He fell in the definition with Argentina, who won the gold medal. The Albiceleste did not qualify for Santiago 2023.

Bernardo Redín returns to Chile, where he arrived in January 2018, accompanying his partner, to get a hot iron. The Cali coach was Arturo Salah’s choice to lead La Roja after failing to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. Redín joined Rueda’s coaching staff when the latter signed with Atlético Nacional de Medellín, in 2015. Both touched the continental sky by winning the 2016 Copa Libertadores with Purslane. The former player was also part of Flamengo’s coaching staff, the season before his arrival at Juan Pinto Durán.

“Beny” was an exceptional midfielder who participated in the 1990 World Cup in Italy with the Café team, in a notable generation that also included René Higuita, Andrés Escobar, Carlos Valderrama, Leonel Álvarez and Freddy Rincón, among others. During his coaching career, he had already managed an under-23 team, precisely with La Roja. As Rueda’s assistant, he led the Chilean team in the 2020 Colombia Olympic qualifiers, a qualifier for Tokyo.

The team that traveled to the Caribbean lands included players like Omar Carabalí, Nicolás Díaz, Raimundo Rebolledo, Álex Ibacache, Pablo Aránguiz, Ángelo Araos, Gabriel Suazo, Iván Morales and Diego Valencia . Several of them were present in Absolute Red during Rueda’s time. The start of the group stage was auspicious, with a 3-0 victory against Ecuador. But the result was complex. Chile would be eliminated due to goal difference, overtaken precisely by host Colombia.
