Warren: Ideally, I would not announce the Usyk-Fury fight in advance, but we had to in order to eliminate mandatory defenses

The promoter would like to keep the intrigue until the fight between Tyson and Francis Ngannou takes place

Promoter Frank Warren said that he would not like to announce a fight for the undisputed title between the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO world champion Alexander Usik and holder of the WBC heavyweight belt Tyson Fury before the Briton’s fight with the ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou.

“The reason this was announced was because contracts had to be submitted to the governing bodies, especially the IBF. It was necessary to do this before they would assign a mandatory defense to Usyk with Filip Hrgovic. We had to negotiate our contracts because boxing organizations allow unification fights. These fights take precedence over mandatory defense.”

“And we knew that as soon as we added these contracts, information would leak, someone would say that they were included. So we had to take the bull by the horns. In an ideal world, I would not like to say that the agreement was signed. I would like to do this after the Fury-Ngannou fight, provided Tyson does everything necessary. This is how we would like to do it.”

The 10-round fight between Fury and former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou will take place on October 28 in the Saudi capital of Riyadh. The WBC granted Tyson special permission to fight the former UFC champion.

It is expected that immediately after this fight the final date for the unification fight between Fury and WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO belt holder Alexander Usyk will be confirmed. The “Gypsy King” himself expects that his meeting in the ring with the Ukrainian will take place in December 2023.
