The issue of Kharlan’s disqualification due to a “black card” at the 2023 World Cup was “closed” – so the Ukrainian was able to compete at the tournament in Istanbul

The FIE did not cancel the disqualification of the Ukrainian fencer, but did not leave it in force – thanks to this, Olga took part in the recent Satellite, where she won gold.

World Fencing Federation (FIE) made a “Solomon decision” regarding the Ukrainian Olga Kharlan. The issue with her disqualification “was closed,” which allowed Olga to take part in the FIE Satellite series tournament in Istanbul on the twentieth of October.

President of the Ukrainian Fencing Federation Mikhail Ilyashev reported that the FIE officially notified the FFU back in September that the issue had been “closed” with Kharlan’s disqualification. In fact, this wording means that the previous decision was not canceled, but at the same time it was not left in force.

Thus, Harlan was able to calmly prepare for international competitions. The first of them came at a tournament in Istanbul, where the Olympic champion won a gold medal, beating compatriot Alina Komashchuk in the final of the saber competition.

Let us remind you that at the end of July, Olga Kharlan was disqualified after defeating Russian Anna Smirnova at the 2023 World Cup, whose representative of Ukraine refused to shake hands. The disqualification was subsequently suspended. The final verdict was expected at the end of August. If the black card had been upheld, Harlan would have received a 60-day suspension and would not have been able to participate in the Istanbul tournament.

Ilyashev reported on July 29 that the FIE was “looking for an opportunity to satisfy the interests” of the Ukrainian side, while “not admitting that it was wrong.”

At the tournament in Istanbul, Ukrainian fencers won three medals on October 21-22. In addition to the mentioned awards Kharlan and Komashchuk, foil fencer Alina Polozyuk also won gold.
