Fortaleza could be the first northeastern team to champion the continent

The decision of the 2023 Copa Sudamericana between Fortaleza and LDU Quito will be this Saturday, 28th; Tricolor’s pioneering spirit as a northeastern team in continental tournaments is debated

O Strength turns its attention to the grand final of Copa Sudamericana 2023. Tricolor do Pici will face LDU Quito this Saturday, 28th, in a single match, at the Domingo Burgueño Miguel Stadium, located in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Thus, the team has the prospect of winning the most important title in the club’s history.

With the beautiful campaign of Strengthled by the Argentine coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda, some portals raised the idea that the team would be the first Brazilian northeastern team to compete in a continental final. However, this information has been refuted by other sources, for a very peculiar reason.

O CSA had already opened its doors a while ago: the team from Alagoas competed in the final of the extinct Conmebol Cup in its last edition, set in 1999. In the first game, the squad had beaten the Talleres by 4 to 2; In the second, however, the Argentines won 3-0 and conquered South America.

Still, Fortaleza has a chance to make history as the continent’s first Brazilian northeastern champion, against LDU. The Ecuadorian team will represent a great challenge for Leão, who has already given work, including to the Brazilian finalist of the Libertadores 2023, the Fluminense. In 2008, the ‘Universários’ won the cup over the Rio club in the middle of Maracanã.
