The Ukrainian champion insists that his fight against Fury will take place before the end of the year
World champion WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO Alexander Usik commented on the promoter’s words Frank Warren that the fight of a Ukrainian against the holder of the WBC belt Tyson Fury will not take place in 2023.
“Uncle Frank [Уоррен] says some mean things. We have a contract that states that the fight must take place on December 23rd… Let Fury vacate his title first, and then he can rest… Tyson – we have to fight, we have to do it on December 23rd. See you in the ring. I love you”.
“I was nervous that our fight was in jeopardy. I even started him [Фьюри] shouting something like, ‘Use your jab, hit him faster’… It seems weird, but the whole world wants to see us fight, so it’s important for us to do everything we can to make this fight happen.”
Let us remind you that Fury defeated former UFC champion Francis Ngannou and won the Riyadh champion title. The fight, according to boxing rules, lasted all the allotted 10 rounds, as a result of which two judges gave the victory to Fury, one to Ngannou. In the third round, Francis knocked down Tyson, but the Briton managed to return to the fight.
After the fight, Warren drew attention to the cut received by the “Gypsy King”, because of which it was “useless” to immediately schedule a unification fight. The promoter later suggested that it was almost certain that Fury and Usyk would fight in early 2024.
It was previously reported that the fight between the Ukrainian and British champions, who signed a contract at the end of September, is planned to be held on December 23 or January 2024 in Saudi Arabia.
The contract for the undisputed heavyweight title between Usyk and Fury contains a rematch clause. The clause applies to both boxers; the loser can initiate a re-fight.
