Coach Ngannou: I thought we won the fight by a small margin

The specialist is disappointed with the judge’s decision and considers it a special case of a crisis in professional boxing

Dewey Cooper, former UFC champion’s trainer Francis Ngannoucommented on the fight of his ward with the WBC title holder Tyson Fury.

“I thought we won the fight by knockdown. It was a back-and-forth fight, but I felt it was probably evenly matched in the rounds and the knockdown should have given us the advantage – one of the judges scored it 95-94 – which is what I scored as well. In the last round, I even told Francis that he had to stay alert and not let his opponent steal the fight.”

“So I thought we won by a small margin, but even a decent loss in this fight is a great achievement. All of you guys [СМИ], they said that we had no chance. Everyone said he would be knocked out no matter what he did. But he dropped the champion. The main, undefeated champion. His first fight. He went 10 rounds with as much energy as a champion. I felt like we won the fight by one or two rounds.”

“But that’s why boxing is going through a bit of a decline. Boxing is now a business disguised as a sport. We need to be honest and make these decisions as transparent as possible. It didn’t go our way in the end, but I’m proud of Francis.”

Let us remind you that on the night of October 29 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Fury defeated Ngannou and won the Riyadh champion title. The fight, according to boxing rules, lasted all the allotted 10 rounds, following which Fury won by a split decision: two judges gave him the victory with scores of 95–94 and 96–93, and the third – 95–94 in favor of Ngannou. In the third round, Francis knocked down Tyson, but the Briton managed to return to the fight.

British heavyweight Derek Chisora commented on the fight in a similar vein. According to him, Ngannou deserved to win, and this “judicial decision was necessary because the organizers need Fury to fight Usyk at the end of December.”

Fury intends to fight his next fight with WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO world champion Alexander Usik. The British promoter Frank Warren said that he cannot yet name the exact date of the fight between Usyk and Fury. The Briton suffered a cut and will need time to recover.

Most likely, the unification match will take place in early 2024. At the same time, the Ukrainian champion insists that, according to the contract, the fight should take place in December.
