Former Bayern player Lothar Matthäus believes another player should receive the prestigious award this season.
The 2023 Ballon d’Or should go to Erling Haaland, not Lionel Messi. The former player thinks Bavaria and the German national team Lothar Matthäus.
The legendary football player called the Norwegian’s achievements last season more significant, and the Argentine was given the Golden Ball just because of the World Cup.
“Haaland played better than Messi last year. Lionel won unfairly. But it shows that the World Cup is more important than anything else.
I think Haaland is the best player in the last 12 months, he won important trophies from City of Manchester and broke goal scoring records. I don’t think anyone has beaten Haaland. This vote is a farce, even though I’m a Messi fan,” Matthaus told Sky Sport Germany.
We remind you that Messi has previously named the next winners of the Ballon d’Or.
