Athletistic / Football. General Secretary of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Maxim Mitrofanov said that the Russian national team is discussing the possibility of holding friendly matches in Kazan in the summer of 2024 as part of the BRICS Games.
“The BRICS Games will be held in Kazan in June and football in one form or another will be present there. However, in classic football, all federations play in their own competitions. It would be interesting for us to organize our own tournament., and now there are countries that would potentially be interested in participating in such a competition, but they can’t do it because they are busy, so they have to adapt to different formats.
Nevertheless, we will discuss the possibility of organizing matches with several BRICS countries next summer in Kazan. This would make sense, but there are natural restrictions in the form of FIFA windows. At the BRICS tournament, a window will be open only for European national teams,” quotes Mitrofanov from RB Sport.
The BRICS-2024 Games will be held in Kazan from June 12 to 13, 2024. Athletes will participate in 25 sports, including football.
In February 2022, FIFA and UEFA, by joint decision, suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from participation in international tournaments. This is due to the fact that the Russian Armed Forces carried out a special military operation (SVO) on the territory of Ukraine.
