He lost consciousness during a match with AZ in the Dutch championship

Nijmegen striker Bas Dost has suspended his professional career due to myocarditis. The forward was diagnosed with inflammation of the heart muscle after he lost consciousness in the 10th round of the Eredivisie match with AZ.

“I finally found out from my cardiologist what caused what happened to me during the AZ-Nijmegen match in Alkmaar. In recent days I have undergone many examinations, and they showed that I have inflammation of the heart muscle. The causes of myocarditis can vary and the consequences can be quite serious, but I was fortunate to be successfully resuscitated on the field. “I can’t help but express my gratitude to the doctors of Nijmegen and AZ for their adequate work on the field.”

“The examinations will continue in the coming days, and then I will go home. I need to rest to fully recover from what I experienced. Only after this will I be able to better understand my future and tell more about it. In the meantime, I will take a break from football and spend the immediate time with my family.”

“Yesterday afternoon I spoke to the Nijmegen staff and other players over lunch. I was glad to see and talk with them again. I explained to them what had happened to me, what caused it, and what the upcoming period looked like for me. I want to emphasize that my inflammation is not related to vaccinations. I told them that I was confident in my recovery and would return to duty. Hopefully now they can focus on football again.”

During stoppage time of the AZ-Nijmegen match, Dost fell in the area of the central circle. The player was given first aid, after which the match was suspended.

Note that the 34-year-old striker scored a goal in the match with AZ. The meeting was interrupted with the score 2:1 in favor of Nijmegen. The match will be completed on December 6.

In the 2023/24 season, Dost played eight matches for Nijmegen, scored three goals and provided one assist.
