The Brazilians opened the scoring in the first half, German Cano scored. Boca managed to come back in the middle of the second half thanks to the efforts of Luis Advincula.
In overtime, Fluminense forward John Kennedy scored the second goal. The 21-year-old striker received a second yellow card a few minutes later. Boca failed to take advantage of their numerical advantage – soon Frank Fabre received a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Fluminense won the main club trophy in South America for the first time in history. Boca Juniors, after their last victory in 2007, lost their third Copa Libertadores final.
Shakhtar defender Marlon, who plays for Fluminense on loan, entered the field in the 52nd minute, replacing veteran Felipe Melo.
