Warren: We knew Ngannou would be a tough opponent with tremendous punching power and physical strength

Fury beat Ngannou by split decision

Promoter Frank Warren rejected suggestions that the WBC heavyweight title holder Tyson Fury in a fight against a former UFC champion Francis Ngannou performed weakly, trying to advance the date of the fight for the title of absolute world champion with the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO world champion Alexander Usik.

“What nonsense? When was the setup? When Tyson was one or two seconds away from the referee’s go-ahead after being knocked down in the third round? Or when he had to clench his fists and fight hard to snatch a well-deserved victory?

“All this idiocy mainly comes from the same people who, before the fight, said that it was a farce, a sham and a circus, when the world heavyweight champion arranges a crossover fight with Ngannou, in which he will win so easily that the fight will end when he wants. We knew Ngannou would be a tough opponent with tremendous punching power and the physical strength to take hard hits.”

On the night of October 29 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Fury defeated Ngannou and won the Riyadh champion title. The fight, according to boxing rules, lasted all the allotted 10 rounds, following which Fury won by a split decision: two judges gave him the victory with scores of 95–94 and 96–93, and the third – 95–94 in favor of Ngannou. In the third round, Francis knocked down Tyson, but the Briton managed to return to the fight.

Legendary former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis called his compatriot’s victory “lackluster.” Promoter Eddie Hearn, like Chisora, believes Ngannou deserved to win.

Fury intends to fight his next fight with WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO world champion Alexander Usik. The fight between Usik and Fury was planned to be organized on December 23 (both the Ukrainian champion himself and his promoter Alexander Krasyuk insist on this date), but Tyson will not have time to prepare for this time. It was reported that the Briton received two cuts in a fight with the former UFC champion.

Usyk and Fury are expected to enter the ring in February 2024. Note that the contract for the fight for the absolute heavyweight title contains a rematch clause.
