The friendly dog Pickles was essential in the search for the trophy that was stolen before the 1966 World Cup; learn details about the collie’s history
Do you know who you are Pickles? The puppy was considered a little hero for the trophy 1966 World Cup. Even if contested, the original version of the story indicates that the collie was responsible for finding the trophy Jules Rimet which was stolen before the World Cup in question.
Shortly before the start of the World Cup, which was hosted in England, the cup was displayed in the Methodis Central Hill, In London. Although it was not the most valuable item in the place, the trophy was stolen and notes were seen demanding the payment of 15 thousand pounds (which would be approximately R$1.3 million at the current exchange rate).
“It’s a bad joke if in England you can be stolen and never found again.”said the FIFA secretary, Helmut Kaeser. The Federation had also released a statement saying that the disappearance brought discredit to itself and the European country.
The local police had detained an intermediary, however, they had not found the trophy. Behold, in March of that year, David Corbett was walking his dog, Pickles, when he started sniffing his neighbor’s car and turning his attention to one of the front wheels.

“I was going to the phone booth because my sister-in-law was about to have a baby. Pickles saw that there was a package next to the tire and I was afraid it was a bomb. It was a time when the IRA (Irish Republican Army) was committing attacks. But it wasn’t. I tore it a little at the bottom and saw a piece of the board. I immediately recognized what it was.”Corbett told “DailyMail”.
Davi took the trophy to the police station and the authorities said it was not the stolen Jules Rimet. After insistence, they carried out a more detailed check and realized that it was the original, which led them to suspect Corbett. He, in turn, declared that he contributed to all the questions and that he had nothing to hide.
Even though the episode still raises suspicions, Pickles became a national hero and one of the most famous dogs in the sporting world. At the time, his owner received 5 thousand pounds between the reward and advertising contracts generated with the famous puppy.
