The Lions, who played in the minority for almost a half, did not endure the slightest
Benfica in the Lisbon derby achieved an incredible victory over Sporting in the home match of the 11th round of the championship Portugal – 2:1.
The Eagles needed to win the battle of the Primeira Liga leaders, because before the reporting round Sporting had a three-point advantage over their neighbors.
But it was the Lions who had the stronger first half. Ukrainian Anatoly Trubin made two saves, but failed to save after Victor Gyokeres’ powerful shot into the near corner in the 45th minute.
For the main goalkeeper of the Ukrainian national team, this match was the 12th for Benfica and the seventh in the championship.
At the beginning of the second half of the match, the Eagles gained a numerical advantage – Goncalo Inacio was sent off for the second yellow card. But the home team had big problems creating chances – the first shot on target was Angel Di Maria’s long-range shot in the 75th minute.
The pressure from Roger Schmidt’s team led to nothing for a long time. But the hosts were helped by the standard, which even Trubin matched. The ball after Di Maria’s cross did not reach the Ukrainian, but it went to Joao Neves, who shot through Antonio Adana’s goal with his second touch.
The eagles rushed for victory – and got it in the last attack. The goal was scored by Kasper Tengstedt from Fredrik Orsnes’ cross. At first, the goal was canceled due to offside, but VAR sorted it out – four centimeters turned out to be fatal for Sporting.
Monstrous drama for the Eagles, who blew a +6 lead in three minutes and fell back to second place in additional indicators.
Benfica’s next league match will be against Moreirense away on December 3.
