A Ukrainian opera singer received five bullet wounds while evacuating people in the Kharkov region
Singer Sergei Ivanchuk will perform the national anthem before the match Ukraine — Italy November 20 in qualifying Euro 2024.
He previously studied in Italy to become an opera singer. Immediately after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine took place, Ivanchuk began volunteering – delivering humanitarian aid and evacuating people from combat zones.
During one of these trips in March 2022, a car with Ivanchuk and other people came under fire from an enemy DRG in the Kharkov region. The car was hit by 30 bullets, five of which hit Sergei himself. His legs were shot and his lung was damaged. The car miraculously managed to reach the Ukrainian checkpoint.
Ivanchuk underwent several operations, and subsequently went to Germany for rehabilitation. The doctors not only saved Sergei’s life, he started singing again. His performance of the anthem before the decisive European qualifying match is intended to inspire Ukrainian football players.
The Ukrainian team takes second place in Group C, three points ahead of Italy.
Sergei Rebrov’s team will play against Italy on November 20 in Leverkusen (Germany) at the Bay Arena stadium, starting at 20:45 local time or at 21:45 Kyiv time. At the end of October, ticket sales for the final match of the blue-yellows in the group round of qualifying began.
