Personnel changes continue at the Provençal club
Former defender of Bayern and a number of Italian clubs Mehdi Benatia will be appointed to the post of sports director Marseille.
Benatia, 36, had a highly successful club career. As a central defender, he played for Udinese, Roma, Bayern and Juventus, among others. He played 58 matches for the Moroccan national team. Retired from career in 2021.
Marseille is also no stranger to Mehdi’s club. He stayed in the Provençal club’s system from 2004 to 2008, but never played a single match for the first team.
The season is shaping up quite turbulently for Olympique de Marseille. In September, OM parted ways with head coach Marcelino after a meeting between the club’s management and fans who threatened the club’s managers with violence. Against the backdrop of these threats, the leadership of Marseille temporarily suspended its powers. Subsequently, the Italian Gennaro Gattuso became the new coach of the Provencals.
At the end of October, Marseille fans again distinguished themselves by throwing stones at a Lyon bus. As a result, the head coach of the Weavers, Fabio Grosso (again, an Italian), was injured, and the match was postponed.
Marseille has won only one match out of the last eight in the French Championship and is in tenth place with 13 points. In the Europa League, Gattuso’s team is doing better: 8 points after four rounds and first place in Quartet B.
