The blue-yellows played for the first time in Germany more than 29 years ago
20 November Ukrainian national team will play in Leverkusen with the Italian national team in the eighth round match Euro 2024 qualification. For the blue-yellows, this match will be the 12th in the homeland of the Bundesteam and first in Leverkusen. On the eve of the Ukraine-Italy match, we remember how the Ukrainian team played in Germany.
Debut almost 30 years ago
29 years and 2 months, or 10,678 days, will pass from the first match of the blue-yellows in Germany to the last match in this country. For the first time in Germany, the Ukrainian national team played on August 26, 1994, playing a friendly match with the UAE team. That match ended in a draw – 1:1, thanks to a goal by Boris Finkel, who played the first match for the blue-yellows, in the last minute of the meeting.
The UAE-Ukraine match took place in Grassau, a small community in Bavaria.
Leverkusen is the ninth German city for the Ukrainian national team
The Ukrainian national team will play for the first time in Leverkusen. Bayer’s home will be the ninth German city to host Blue-Yellow matches. Before this, the Ukrainian national team played in Grassau, Bremen, Dortmund, Cologne, Ingolstadt, Leipzig, Hamburg and Berlin. The last three cities hosted two matches of the Ukrainian national team.

The already mentioned Grassau is the smallest German town that hosted matches of the Ukrainian national team. The match with the UAE national team, according to official data, was attended by about 1,000 spectators at the local municipal stadium.
Most productive year
Of the 11 matches of the blue-yellows in Germany, five took place in 2006. Which, however, is not surprising: Germany hosted the World Cup, in which the blue-and-yellows took part. The Ukrainian’s record at the World Cup: two wins, two losses and a draw (main and extra time of the match with Switzerland). The goal difference is 5:7.
Negative statistics
In Germany, the Ukrainian team played against eight opponents. Most often, and not surprisingly, there are four matches against Germany. Also among the blue-yellow’s opponents were teams from the UAE, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Switzerland, Italy and Turkey.
The statistics are sad for the Ukrainian team – 2 wins, three draws (including the already mentioned match with Switzerland) and six defeats.
Which Ukrainian scored in Germany?
In 11 matches in Germany, the Ukrainian national team scored 11 goals: 10 themselves, one scored by Rudiger in a friendly match this year.
The best sniper of the blue-yellows in matches in Germany is Andrei Shevchenko, who scored three goals in this country: against the Bundesteam, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. Viktor Tsygankov scored two goals in Germany, scoring a double in a friendly match with Germany this year. The already mentioned Finkel, Yaremchuk (Germany in the Nations League), Rusol, Rebrov and Kalinichenko (all in the match with Saudi Arabia at the 2006 World Cup) scored one goal each.
