Ex-River Plate coach Gallardo heads Saudi Al-Ittihad

The Argentine signed a one-and-a-half-year contract

Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo headed the Saudi Al-Ittihad.

The ex-mentor of River Plate signed a contract for one and a half years. The Saudi Arabian club also announced the arrival of a new coaching staff along with the Argentine.

Gallardo began his coaching career at Uruguayan Nacional, and then worked for eight years at River Plate. With the Argentine club, the coach won the Copa Libertadores twice, the Copa Sudamericana once and a number of other trophies.

Al Ittihad parted ways with coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who has been with the club since the summer of 2022 and led them to the 2022/23 league title. Among the candidates for the post of the new coach of the club from Jeddah were the Portuguese Paulo Sousa and the ex-coach of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team Julen Lopetegui. Al Ittihad also offered the post of director to former Milan technical director Paolo Maldini.

Al-Ittihad, led by interim coach Hassan Khalifa, ended a five-match winless run in the league by beating the Abha club 4-2 with a hat-trick from Karim Benzema. According to rumors, it was the conflict with the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner that became one of the main reasons for the dismissal of Espirito Santo.
