Head coach of the Italian national team Luciano Spalletti before the match of the final round of the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament with the Ukrainian team explained why he congratulated Zenit on their victory in the last season of the RPL. This happened after the beginning of the creation of the Northern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine.
“First of all, at Zenit I trained many players and worked with many coaches. During my work there, Alexey Miller also led the club. From them I received congratulations for winning Serie A and I believe I had the right to do the same, congratulating them on their victory in the Russian Championship.
I think it is a bit incorrect to link sporting events and sporting activities with different types of conflicts, with which I categorically disagree. I oppose any conflict. Italians, including the Italian national team, are very close to the people who are currently suffering. I would like to emphasize that we all sincerely hope that this conflict will end as quickly as possible. But now I also have to mention the people who recently suffered from the floods in Tuscany,” Spalletti was quoted as saying by Ukrainian media.
The match between the national teams of Ukraine and Italy will take place on November 20 in Leverkusen (Germany) and will start at 22:45 Moscow time. The Italians only need a draw to qualify for the Euro 2024 final.
Luciano Spalletti led Zenit from 2009 to 2014. Under his leadership, the blue-white-blues became champions of Russia and won the country’s Cup.
