Lucescu: Half of the Ukrainian national team consists of players I coached

Today Ukraine will play a qualifying match for Euro 2024 against Italy

Ex-mentor of Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv Mircea Lucescu commented on the decisive qualifying match for the 2024 European Championship between Ukraine And Italy.

“Half of the Ukrainian national team consists of players whom I coached and took under my wing when they were very young. Then, in Shakhtar and Dynamo, many personalities were formed.”

“I was invited to this match to see the moment that the entire Ukrainian nation is experiencing with great anticipation and delight. This match could become historic. It is clear that Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine makes the meeting even more epic. Players can bring both suffering to Ukraine and pride for the entire country.”

Ukraine will play against Italy on Monday, November 20, in Leverkusen (Germany) at the BayArena stadium. The meeting starts at 21:45 Kyiv time. The squad for the match did not include defenders Alexander Karavaev and Maxim Taloverov, as well as midfielder Yegor Nazarina.

The Italian team is in second place in Group C with 13 points. Ukraine also has 13 points, but is inferior to Italy in additional indicators. To qualify for the Euro directly, Sergei Rebrov’s team needs to beat Squadra Azzurra with any score in a head-to-head match.

If Ukraine fails to beat Italy and qualify directly for the Euro from second place in its group, it will have a fallback option – the Nations League playoffs. Rebrov’s team will be waiting for the “final four” of division A or division B – this will be decided by a draw.
