Fans of the Brazilian national team started a fight in the stands, attacking Argentina fans. Brazilian police immediately intervened in the conflict. In response, Argentina fans began throwing seats from the stands. At least one person was reportedly carried away from the Maracanã stadium on a stretcher.

The Argentina national team players tried to calm the fans. Among the Brazilians, only captain Seleçao Marquinhos had a dialogue with the fans. As a result, Argentina captain Lionel Messi led his team into the stands.

The match ended with a minimal victory for Argentina thanks to a goal by Nicolas Otamendi. Argentina remains the leader of the South American selection, Uruguay is second, one point behind. Brazil suffered a third defeat in a row and dropped to sixth place.
