Interview with Giorgio Perinetti, Avellino’s sporting director, on columns Corriere del Veneto.
Giorgio Perinetti, you were Venezia’s sporting director from 2015 to 2017, leading the team from Serie D to Serie B: did you expect such a second place? “I would be lying if I said no, I think he has what it takes to compete for direct promotion. Even last year, I expected him to be the main character throughout the entire journey, even if some problems back then created a dangerous situation. Antonelli knew how to balance the situation, and Vanoli did a great job, and for that he should be given credit.”
Did you meet Duncan Niederauer during your Venice experience? “Not in detail, and I regret it because he has proven that he is a president with outstanding qualities. He realized his mistakes and corrected them, he took Venezia to Serie A and perhaps will return them to the top again. Really, all the ingredients are there to make it happen.”
Who are the most formidable opponents? “Parma has shown that she has something more than everyone else, at least so far. But in my opinion, Cremonese are the most dangerous, they started poorly, but have an impressive and complete squad, including in terms of substitutions. I firmly believe that we will see its main character until the end.”
Many are convinced that Venice can become a consolidated reality of Italian football at the highest level. In your opinion, are there conditions? “I’m reading and people are telling me that now is the time for a new stadium. And Bosco dello Sport, in fact, could be a decisive turning point for the future of this club. Otherwise, all the ingredients are there, absolutely everything to dream big.”
Is the recently opened Ca’ Venezia sports center another fundamental element? “I really regret that I was not invited to the inauguration. I feel part of this project because I laid the first stone when, together with Joe Tacopina, we resurrected the company from the ashes. I hope it was just an oversight, I admit, the lack of invitation left me with a lot of bitterness. I hope to be able to visit Ca’Venezia in the near future.” […].
Bari-Venice on Saturday. As a double ex, what kind of match are you looking forward to? “Venice is afraid of a breakup, and I understand them. After championship pit stops, you never know in what conditions you will find your players.”
Will Bari meet Venice? “Restarting after losing Serie A in the 94th minute of the final would have been difficult for anyone. But I see Bari as a playoff team, a good team.”
