In the WORLD RPL in 2023, an official match can be held with a system of virtual offside lines, said the chairman of the refereeing committee of the Russian Football Union (RFU). Pavel Kamantsev on air MATCH PRIME.
In August 2023, Chinese company Beijing Rigor Technology received a certificate from the International Football Federation (FIFA) for the use of virtual offside lines that will be used during RPL matches.
In October, Kamantsev said that the system for determining offside lines would be tested in two matches of the 16th round of the RPL. This system is currently being tested during the CSKA – Dynamo game. Midway through the second half, the score was tied at 2:2.
— What are your first impressions of this technology?
“We have been testing these lines for some time, almost a year. RPL representatives are discovering this technology for the first time. The latest updates meet our high expectations. We really hope that the test will be successful in the future. And during the match “Orenburg” – “Akhmat”, where there will be different technical conditions and a different stadium, the technology will confirm its performance and fault tolerance, and we will be able to proceed with its official use during matches. And we will ask a lot fewer questions about offside.
— Work in Moscow stadiums is easier, there are more cameras and better technology. What do you expect from the tests during matches of other teams?
— I would not divide between Moscow and non-Moscow. St. Petersburg also has a very good stadium, so to speak! It all depends more on the quality of the stadiums, their modernity and the number of cameras. And also on the status of the match! This is why we chose two different stadiums to receive and show the RPL representatives the different capabilities of virtual offside technologies. In Orenburg, they will work in much more difficult conditions. But not all RPL clubs yet have state-of-the-art stadiums. That’s life. And together with our Chinese partners, we will develop this technology for use even in Russian Cup matches, where the stadiums are of an even lower category. But we will develop the technology so that it can be used even under certain conditions in the Krasnoyarsk arena.
— When will we see these lines outside of test mode during our championship matches?
— We have no technical restrictions on their conditional achievement, even in the next round. We need to discuss the test results with RPL, make sure they are suitable, fault tolerance has been confirmed, agree on the final financial parameters and we can start working. That is, purely in theory, it will probably be possible to organize an official match this year. We are striving to achieve this, but it will depend more on the match in Orenburg and the test results. Because so far we’ve only achieved half of it, we’ve achieved it quite impressively, so good. But I don’t want to anticipate. Let’s hope that we will play one match already this year, and in the spring of the season there will be more and more of these matches, ”Kamantsev said on MATCH FIRST.
Last season and at the start of the 2023/24 season, the video assistant referee (VAR) system in Russia operated without offside lines. In controversial offside situations, the video assistants could not intervene, but relied on the decision of the assistant referees.
