Controversy in Colombia over a Christmas character who “paid homage” to the Chapecoense plane crash

In La Unión, the Colombian municipality where the plane crash of the Brazilian team Chapecoense occurred, a Christmas figurine alluding to the tragedy after causing the rejection of the inhabitants for having considered inadequate the recreation of this episode which left the sad record of 71 dead and which shook the world of football.

As part of the Christmas decorations that adorn the main park of this town in the department of Antioquia, Several characters were installed that evoke the “idiosyncrasy” of the place and historical events, including an airplane made from metallized paper rods and a luminous pipe, which alluded to the accident that occurred at Cerro Gordo on the night of November 28, 2016.

After the controversy and the rain of criticism, the mayor of La Unión announced in a press release the removal of this structure and apologized for the “discomfort” that was generated.

“Given that the installation of the figure of the plane, which alludes to the event that occurred on November 28, 2016 and which marked the city, provoked different reactions on social networks, “The decision was taken by the mayor of La Unión to remove said character from the main park”, says the note signed by the mayor of the municipality, Edgar Alexander Osorio.

Add this “The intention of the Christmas decoration was never to offend the sensibilities of the community” and states that “we understand and validate the discomfort that has been caused, so we apologize and will proceed with the removal of the figurine.”

In the press release they mention that for this edition they wanted to work on a theme also alluding to the architecture of the place, its flora and fauna, in addition to “representing the history of the municipality”, where it remains still traces of the tragedy. , especially in what is today called Cerro Chapecoense, with crosses that remember the members of the Brazilian team and the crew members of the LaMia Avro RJ85 plane who lost their lives.

There were 77 people on board the plane (including the Brazilian club team, which was going to play the Copa Sudamericana final against Atlético Nacional de Medellín) and 71 died.

The plane being dismantled, the municipality planned to turn on the lighting this Saturday to welcome the Christmas holidays and decorate the main park, where next Tuesday we will celebrate a Eucharist to commemorate the seven years of the plane accident which put football into mourning and which forever marked Chapecoense and the inhabitants of this Colombian city.
