Imprisoned since January this year, Daniel Alves had his fourth request for provisional release denied by the courts; Spanish press indicates trial date
The Court of Barcelona, Spain, denied the fourth request for provisional release of Daniel Alves this Monday, 27. The Spanish court refused the new request and decided to keep the Brazilian player in prison. The athlete has been detained since January this year, accused of sexual assault against a young woman in a nightclub in the city.
The Investigating Judge stated that he continues to consider “the precautionary measure of provisional arrest necessary to avoid the risk of escape”, according to information from the newspaper “La Vanguardia”.
The publication says that the magistrate would have considered that the proximity of the trial date “only increases the aforementioned risk of escape”. According to the local press, the Brazilian should be tried between the end of 2023 and the beginning of next year.
Understand the case
The ‘case Daniel Alves‘ gained some revelations from several Spanish newspapers. The vehicles revealed excerpts of the statement given by the woman who was sexually assaulted by the lateral. It is important to remember that he has been in prison since the morning of January 20th, shortly after telling his version of the story to the Spanish justice system.
The woman who allegedly suffered the attack was present at the Sutton nightclub, in Barcelona, on December 30, 2022. On that occasion, the group she was part of was invited to go to a VIP area of the club. Immediately, people accepted and the waiter took the woman and her friends towards the table where Daniel Alves was.
According to the woman’s testimony, she did not immediately recognize the player. Alongside the player, there were also his friends, but the athlete was the only one who danced with the victim. While both danced together, Daniel Alves allegedly took “her hand reached his penis several times, and she withdrew it in fright” with the situation. The party continued and, around 4:30 am (local time), the formerBrazilian Team made a proposal to the woman.
Still following the victim’s statement, he allegedly asked her to follow him to a hallway, where she ended up being cornered in the bathroom. The woman tried to escape, but Daniel Alves held her tightly, performed the sexual act and even ejaculated. Following the sexual assault, the athlete left the nightclub and she spoke about the episode with security guards and friends.
After the incident, she went to a hospital for tests and, according to Spanish newspapers, there was semen on her dress. This evidence caused the Spanish Court to take an even stronger decision on the crime of sexual assault and, therefore, the player was arrested. Furthermore, according to the local press, the athlete gave different versions of the story and ended up contradicting himself. In the end, he admitted that there was sexual intercourse, but that it was consensual. Later, Daniel would have said that he did not know the victim.
