Banned from football, Marco Polo Del Nero criticized Ednaldo Rodrigues’ management and accused CBF president of spending R$400 million
Former president of the CBF, Marco Polo Del Nero asked for the resignation of Ednaldo Rodrigues, current commander of the entity that governs national football. In an article published by “UOL”, the former director questioned the “financial directions” of the Brazilian Football Confederation.
Del Nero has been banned from football since 2018 and banned from carrying out any management activity after involvement in corruption scandals. In the article, the former president claimed “huge concern” with the management of the CBF and accused Ednaldo of spending R$400 million.
“As a fan and enthusiast of the potential of Brazilian football, it causes me great concern to see the financial direction of the CBF with this precarious, reckless management and dissociated from the reality that we are following under the current president”, shot Marco Polo Del Nero.
“For the good of Brazilian football, I think he should accept his incompetence and resign. Or whoever has the power to do so, which is the General Assembly, could remove him from there before he compromises the future of Brazilian football as a whole”, followed the former top hat.
“The financial health of the CBF, which seemed unshakable, now appears to be at imminent risk. The current management inherited cash of R$1.25 billion and growing revenues. And from what we have news, the balance is now below R$870 million. From April until now”he completed.
According to “UOL”, the CBF closed the first year of Ednaldo’s management, in 2022, with R$887.9 million in cash. In the previous year, under joint command with Caboclo, it was R$723.9 million. Cash in 2020 was R$873 million.
“The question that remains is where did the president spend these 400 million if what we see is Brazilian football declining, the CBF completely stagnant, the Brazilian team from bad to worse! A complete mess, everyone dissatisfied, abandoned clubs! A really chaotic scene”accused Marco Polo Del Nero.
In response to “UOL”, the CBF stated that the information released by Del Nero is false. The entity stated that it recorded the largest surplus in history in 2022.
“CBF does not comment on fake news. Furthermore, it is public that the entity had the largest surplus in its history in 2022. Furthermore, it is also public that the CBF has made the biggest investment in its history, serving those forgotten until years ago, such as the clubs in Series C and D and women’s football, which has already been widely reported”countered the entity.
“All of this follows transparency and anti-corruption clauses endorsed by FIFA, which years ago suspended transfers to the CBF due to corruption scandals”, completed.
Corruption scandal
The FIFA Ethics Committee announced, in April 2017, the lifetime ban of Marco Polo Del Nero from any activity related to football, nationally and internationally.
The entity also imposed a fine of 1 million Swiss francs (R$3.51 million, at the time) for Del Nero’s involvement in the bribery scheme in exchange for contracts for media and marketing companies involved with tournament rights, such as Copa América, Libertadores and Copa do Brasil.
