The Pitmen’s captain’s contract runs until the end of the season
Midfielder Shakhtar Taras Stepanenko said that during the winter break he would think about further options for continuing his career.
“I have a contract until the summer, and to be honest, this is the first time in my life that I have only 6 months left on my contract. It was always five years, then two. I think a lot about this, and, one might say, I’m also worried.”
“I still have the strength to play and continue my career. In the winter I’ll see how it goes, what options I have for continuing my career.”
“To be honest, I want to be insured. Because we still have to live until summer. And football is a game where you can get injured or anything. And when you are 6 months and 34 years old, then this is no longer the case… Everyone looks at your passport, despite the fact that you play all the matches in Shakhtar, in the national team at a normal level. So I’m thinking about it a lot, talking to people and let’s see what happens in the winter.”
Stepanenko has been playing for Shakhtar since 2010. Together with the Miners, the midfielder won nine Ukrainian championship titles and won the Ukrainian Cup seven times. This season, the captain played 18 matches for the club in all competitions, scoring one assist.
Shakhtar took third place in Group H of the Champions League. Marino Pusic’s team will play in the 1/16 of the Europa League. In the Ukrainian Championship, the Miners are in fourth place.
