Palkin: We had high hopes for De Zerbi

Shakhtar ended cooperation with the head coach ahead of schedule

CEO Miner Sergei Palkin thanked the ex-coach of the miners Roberto De Zerbi for team work. Palkin noted that the club had high hopes for the Italian specialist.

“De Zerbi spent an incomplete season with the team, only 30 matches, but even during this time he confirmed that he is a strong and ambitious coach, and we were once again convinced that a year ago we made the absolutely right choice. The club had high hopes for Roberto and it is unfortunate that, due to the circumstances, the potential of our cooperation was not realized to the full,” said the CEO.

“De Zerbi entered his name in the club’s history as a winning coach: together with the team, he won the Ukrainian Super Cup 2021 trophy and confidently led Shakhtar to the league title,” Palkin said.

“Separately, I would like to say thanks to Roberto and his coaching staff for their exceptional integrity and devotion to the club, when, after the start of a full-scale war, they remained loyal to the team and together with it held a charity tour in support of Ukraine,” the CEO wrote.

Earlier, Shakhtar officially announced the termination of cooperation with head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian should be replaced by Igor Yovichevich, whose last place of work is Dnepr-1. The Croatian was offered a contract for a period of two years.

The last championship of Ukraine was ended ahead of schedule due to the attack of Russian troops. Shakhtar ended the season in first place and advanced to the Champions League group stage.

The start of the new season of the Ukrainian Premier League is tentatively scheduled for August 23.
