Ajax sensationally lost to an amateur club USV Hercules in the 1/16 finals Dutch Cup – 2:3.
The team from Utrecht took the lead in the first half after a goal from Tim Peters, who took advantage of a blunder by the visiting defense. After the break, the Hercules forward scored a double with a powerful shot from distance.
The Amsterdam team managed to win back before the end of regulation time; Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom scored. However, already in the compensated minutes, the hosts snatched victory after a free kick.
Hercules plays in the fourth strongest division in the Netherlands. The team from Utrecht won the main draw of the national cup for the first time since 1937. In the 1/8 finals, Hercules’ opponent will be the representative of the Eerste Division (the second strongest division) Cambuur.
Ajax lost to an amateur team in the national cup for the first time in their history. The Amsterdam team will play their next match against the Go Ahead Eagles on January 14.
