Former FIFA referee Alexei Nikolaev compared the level of work of judges in Russia and Europe.
— We see that now referees make mistakes in all European championships, and these errors are quite resounding. They often involve interaction with video referees. I would not compare arbitration in Russia and other countries.

— I think that in the top 5 European championships, we also have, more or less, qualified, good and approximately equal refereeing. We have enough qualified referees. Naturally, there are no mistakes,” Nikolaev was quoted as saying by Legalbet.
Nikolaev participated in the Russian championships from 2000 to 2018. In 2014 he was recognized as the best referee in the country.
