The functionary will relieve himself of a number of responsibilities in the summer in order to focus on transferring affairs to his successor
Chairman of the Board Borussia Dortmund Hans-Joachim Watzke will leave the club at the end of 2025.
Watzke did not renew his contract with Dortmund, as he informed the team at a training camp in Spain. In addition, the functionary asked to be released from responsibility for the sports sector after June 30, 2024, in order to focus on transferring affairs to his successor.
“Next year I will have been in office for 20 years. At a certain point, this is enough. I wanted to announce this early to smooth the transition of powers over the next year and a half,” the functionary said.
Watzke, 64, has been chairman of the board since February 2005. During this time, Borussia became German champion twice, won the German Cup and Super Cup three times each, and also appeared in the Champions League final.
Dortmund are in fifth place in the Bundesliga. The next official match of Borussia D will play on January 13 against Darmstadt.
