Franz Beckenbauer died yesterday at the age of 78. During his career, the German football legend won the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup with the national team, as well as five Bundesliga titles and three European Cups in a row between 1974 and 1976 with Bayern Munich. As coach of the West German national team, he won the Italia 90 final against Diego Armando Maradona’s Argentina. He won two Ballon d’Ors in 1972 and 1976. He has suffered from health problems for several years and has undergone two heart surgeries in recent years.
