The Madrid Commercial Court will hear on Tuesday the complaint of the Spaniard Francisco Lopez, who claims to be the author of the video assistant referee (VAR) system in football, reports Marca.
Lopez claims to have first submitted the idea of using video replays to the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture in 1999. He claims that the VAR system was developed based on his project titled “Football of the 21st century”.
Lopez previously said he intended to sue the International Football Federation over VAR. He spent seven years seeking recognition as his authorship in the invention of the system, of which FIFA and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) were informed. The document says the court must decide whether to stop the use of VAR in football, at least as a precautionary measure. Lopez is demanding 300 million euros in compensation.
VAR was first used in August 2016 during an MLS championship match and was subsequently implemented in all major tournaments. In Russia, VAR was used for the first time in April 2019 during the Russian Cup match between Ural Yekaterinburg and Arsenal Tula.
