The record could become absolute for the majors if Svitolina wins her third round match at AO-2024
For the first time in the history of Ukraine, two of our compatriots at once, Marta Kostyuk And Dayana Yastremskayareached the fourth round (1/8 finals) Australian Open in tennis.
Let us remind you that Marta snatched a strong-willed victory over Russian Elina Avenesyan in the third round match. At the same time, 21-year-old Kostyuk became the youngest Ukrainian tennis player to reach such a late stage of the Australian Open.
Today, January 20, Yastremskaya beat American Emma Navarro in three sets and reached the 1/8 finals of the AO-2024.
Previously, only three times in the history of Grand Slam tournaments, two Ukrainian tennis players simultaneously reached the 1/8 finals. In all three cases, one of them was Elina Svitolina: in 2019 together with Yastremskaya (Wimbledon), and in 2023 – twice in company with Lesya Tsurenko (Roland Garros and again Wimbledon).
An absolute record can be set today if the first racket of Ukraine wins her third round match of AO-2024 against Victoria Golubich from Switzerland. The match will start at 12:00.
