Captain Gornyakov extended his contract for another season
Midfielder Taras Stepanenko spoke about how he decided to renew his contract with Miner.
“I’m very happy to stay at home, play and represent the honor of such a big club as Shakhtar, so I have only warm feelings. My family and friends supported me, so I am very happy. I will work hard and prove that this is deserved, and not just like that.”
“To be honest, I didn’t think for a long time, but I talked for a long time with my family living abroad, and it’s hard for me to be apart. We discussed that if I stay, they should understand that they will live abroad, and I will live in Ukraine. We will have to endure, work, and only when peace comes in Ukraine will we be together. This is the only reason I doubted signing the contract.”
“The last two contracts are very emotional, because there was a period when I thought that I would quit football altogether due to injuries. When you go through difficult trials, find yourself at a new level, try to play and show your best, this is rewarded by the club offering you a new contract. I’m happy to stay home and want to thank the president, management, coaching staff and family – they all supported me. I will be with Shakhtar until the end.”
Captain Gornyakov extended his contract with the club for a year and a half – until the end of the 2024/25 season. Other terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Stepanenko has been playing for Shakhtar since the summer of 2010. This season he played 18 matches for the Donetsk club in all tournaments, scoring one assist.
Shakhtar are in fourth place in the UPL, three points behind the leaders, but with two games in hand. The miners will play Marseille in the 1/16 finals of the Europa League in February. The team is currently at training camp in Belek, Turkey.
