“Udinese” banned for life from attending team matches for a fan found guilty of insulting the goalkeeper “Milan” Mike Maignan because of racism during an Italian championship match.
Saturday’s meeting in Udine ended with a victory for the Milan club with a score of 3:2. The match was suspended in the 33rd minute due to the behavior of home fans who shouted racist insults at Maignan. The visiting goalkeeper took off his gloves and entered the stands, but quickly returned. After the match, Maignan criticized the fans, the authorities and Udinese for encouraging racism.
— In collaboration with the local police and with the help of the video surveillance cameras at the Udinese stadium, we identified the person responsible for the discriminatory behavior against Maignan.
The man was banned for life from attending Udinese matches. This ban takes effect immediately.
We believe such decisive action is necessary to send a clear message that racism has no place in football and in society. “Udinese strongly opposes any form of discrimination and we are committed to creating an inclusive and respectful environment in our football community,” reads the Udinese website.
International Football Federation (FIFA) president Gianni Infantino previously said teams whose fans display racism during the match should receive a forfeit.
