The matches of the 22nd day of the Italian Championship will begin with a minute of silence in memory of the national team’s top scorer Luigi Riva, according to website Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
European champion and vice-world champion Riva died Monday at the age of 80. The striker has scored 35 goals in 42 matches for the Italian national team.
“A minute of silence will be observed in memory of Riva before the matches scheduled from Tuesday until the end of the week,” the press release said.
FIGC president Gabriele Gravina also spoke about Riva’s death.
“I am shocked and deeply saddened.” Italian football is in mourning because a true national treasure has left it. Riva embodied the image of a free man and an extraordinary footballer: his pride, his class and his sense of justice united generations and captivated millions of people. Those lucky enough to know him have lost a friend and a role model,” Gravina said.
The Serie A 22nd round program will open with a match between Cagliari, for whom Riva played most of his career, and Turin on Friday.
