Former Italian national football team striker Luigi Riva has died at the age of 80, according to the Italian Football Federation website.
On Monday, Italian media reported that Riva was taken to the cardiology department of a hospital in Cagliari after collapsing at his home. It was possible that the former footballer would undergo angioplasty, a procedure that restores patency to blocked arteries.
Riva is the top scorer in the history of the Italian national team, he has scored 35 goals in 42 matches. As a member of the national team, the striker became European champion in 1968 and runner-up in the world in 1970. Riva spent most of his career at Cagliari.
