Marta took on the fourth racket of the world in a historic tournament
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk put up decent resistance to the fourth racket of the world Coco Gauff from the USA, but still lost in the quarter finals Australian Open 2024.
The duel was a great success – it lasted more than three hours. Marta disappointingly gave the first set to her opponent – she led 5:1, missed a set point in the eighth game, and ultimately lost dramatically in the tiebreaker – 6:8.
In the next game, our compatriot achieved revenge. She had already come back from a score of 3:5, and confidently won the tiebreaker (7:3).
However, Marta no longer had enough strength for the decisive set. Losing 0:5, she managed to win back two games, but nothing more. She completed the historical tournament for the Ukrainian at the 1/4 final stage.
Let us note that Kostyuk became the first who managed to win a set against Gauff at the current AO-2024 – previously the American had only won dry. Coco’s winning streak has been going on since the beginning of November last year (10 matches).
For the first time in her career, Marta reached such a late stage of the Grand Slam tournament. In addition, she became the youngest Ukrainian (21 years old) to play in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Let us remind you that another Ukrainian, Dayana Yastremska, continues to perform in the single women’s bracket. Tomorrow, January 24, she will fight for the right to play in the semi-finals with the sensational Czech Linda Noskova, who previously knocked out the world number one Iga Sventek from the bracket and then defeated the number one Ukrainian racket Elina Svitolina on a refusal.
