Victor spent an hour on the field, Artem played the entire second half, but his efforts were not enough for a comeback
Girona unexpectedly lost on the road Mallorca and finished the performance in Spanish Cup at the quarterfinal stage – 2:3.
Guest coach Michel, as usual for a cup match, started a rotation. Several main players remained on the bench, led by Ukrainian scorer Artem Dovbik. But his compatriot Viktor Tsygankov appeared from the first minutes.
Mallorca literally destroyed the Catalan team in the first half, scoring three times in 14 minutes. Canadian Kyle Larin opened the scoring and made it big with two shots from Abdon Prats.
The main players of Girona immediately came out for the second half, including Dovbik. Tsygankov left the field at the end of the hour, and a few minutes later the intrigue returned to the game. Antonio Railo dropped Christian Stuani in his own penalty area, then expressively argued with the referee – as a result, two yellow cards in a row for the defender and a penalty, which was converted by the injured Uruguayan.
The Catalans locked the hosts in their half, bombarded the penalty area with serves, but did not have any serious chances for a very long time – except that Dovbik and Stuani hit the goal.
In the sixth of seven compensated minutes, Savio played one-to-one with Dovbik and accurately shot low. But it was already too late for Girona. Mallorca reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey for the first time in 15 years.
The team of Dovbik and Tsygankov will play their next match within Examples on January 28 – away against Celta.
