The Blaugranas legend will finish the season and then leave his coaching post
Head coach Barcelona Xavi announced that he will leave his post at the end of the 2023/24 season.
“I want to announce that as of June 30 I will no longer remain coach of Barcelona. We talked about this with Laporta and the rest of the management. I think the club needs to change the dynamic.”
“As a fan, I think about the club and the players. They will become calmer. As a team member, I believe the best time to leave is June 30th. This is common sense. Therefore, I will try my best in the remaining four months to change the dynamics, after which I will step down as Barcelona coach.”
Xavi is a product of Barcelona. He played 769 matches for the Catalans, which is a club record. With Barcelona, the midfielder won the Spanish Championship eight times, the Cup three times, and the Super Cup six times. Also, together with Blaugranas, Xavi triumphed in the Champions League four times.
Xavi took charge of Barcelona in December 2021, replacing Ronald Koeman. With the Blaugrana, the coach won the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga in the 2022/23 season.
The Catalans recently lost to Real Madrid against Ukrainian Andrey Lunin in the Spanish Super Cup (1:4). Blaugranas were also eliminated from the King’s Cup, losing to Athletic (2:4).
Today, in a goal shootout, Xavi’s team lost to Villarreal (3:5). Barcelona is in third place in the La Liga standings. The Catalans will play Napoli in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League.
