Liverpool “contacted the head coach of Leverkusen”Bayer » Xabi Alonso concerning a possible appointment at the end of the current season, reports Foot Mercato.

According to the publication, the English club learned of the intentions in November Jürgen Klopp leaving his position as head coach at the end of the season, after which he established contact with Alonso. The Spanish specialist is at the top of the list of candidates for the position, the document says. Alonso himself insists he is ‘happy at Leverkusen’; in January he said he “didn’t have a direct answer to the Liverpool job question”.

Klopp announced in January that he would leave Liverpool after the end of the 2023/24 season.

Bayer leads the Bundesliga table with 52 points from 20 matches. The team’s unbeaten streak in all tournaments reached 30 matches.

Alonso played for Liverpool from 2004 to 2009. As a member of the team, the Spaniard won the Champions League, FA Cup and Super Cup, as well as the UEFA Super Cup.
