William Trost-Ekong and Teboho Mokoena scored in regulation time
Nigeria beat the national team in a penalty shootout South Africa in the semi-finals African Cup of Nations 2023 — 1:1, 4:2 on pens.
The first half passed without any goals scored. The Nigerians managed to open the scoring after the break, William Trost-Ekong converted a penalty. The Super Eagles had the opportunity to put an end to the match, but after reviewing VAR, the referees overturned Victor Osimhen’s goal and awarded a penalty to South Africa. The penalty was converted by Teboho Mokoena.
The teams did not score any goals in extra time. South Africa were left behind after Grant Kekana’s red card but managed to hold on to a draw until penalties. The Nigerians failed to convert one of their five attempts, and the South African team failed to score twice.
Nigeria became the first African Cup finalist. In the second semi-final match, Cote d’Ivoire will face DR Congo. The match starts at 22:00.
