Zhilei: Fury’s cut could affect the fight with Usik

The Chinese heavyweight noted that the “Gypsy King” will have to take this factor into account in the preparation and tactics of the fight

Interim WBO World Heavyweight Champion Zhang Zhilei believes that the cut suffered by the WBC champion Tyson Fury in training, could affect the course of the British fight with the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO title holder Alexander Usik.

“It’s hard to say how the cut will affect the fight. Each fighter has a different healing time for such injuries. It really depends on the person. But I do think that Tyson Fury has enough time to heal his wounds and find a sparring match. If I were him, I would be very careful to find reliable and understanding sparring partners.”

“A cut can affect the fight, especially if it is an old injury that has opened up. It is entirely possible that this could happen. Oleksandr Usyk may get hit in the eye, but he will also have to expect Tyson Fury to have a strategy to protect the spot. Or have a strategy on how to use Usik’s aggression towards the eye against him. The dissection is really an interesting element.”

The fight for the title of absolute world champion between Usyk and Fury was supposed to take place in Riyadh on February 17. Lennox Lewis was appointed special guest of the event, and the undercard included fights between former IBF world champion in the first heavyweight division Jay Opetai, 19-year-old Moses Itauma and IBF world super featherweight champion Joe Cordina.

However, two weeks before the fight with Usik, Fury was injured during sparring. The Briton’s injury required stitches, due to which Tyson will not have time to recover for the fight with Usyk. According to British cutman Jorge Capetillo, the boxer will need at least three months to recover.

The unification fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion has received a new date – Fury and Usyk are scheduled to meet in the ring on May 18. The event, as before, will be hosted by the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh.
