Dynamo – Fenerbahce. How Lucescu played against the Canaries in Turkey

Mentor Dynamo 11 times crossed paths with the current rival of the white and blue

On July 20, in the first match of the second qualifying round of the Champions League, Dynamo Kiev will play with Fenerbahce. The Dynamo-Fenerbahce match, which will be held in Lodz, Poland, will be the sixth in history and the fifth official match between the Kyiv and Istanbul clubs. The White-Blues have never lost to the Canaries – two wins and three draws. But Dynamo coach Mircea Lucescu, working with Galatasaray, Besiktas and Shakhtar, was inferior to Fenerbahce four times. Sport Arena recalled how the teams of the Romanian specialist played with today’s opponents of the white-blues.

Galatasaray: one win, a draw and three losses

In Turkey, the Romanian specialist worked for four seasons with two clubs – Galatasaray and Besiktas – two seasons each. I must admit, successfully, winning the championship title with each. But the confrontation with Fenerbahce while working in Galatasaray did not work out for Lucescu: only one victory in five matches.

In the 2000/2001 season, Galatasaray Lucescu never beat Fenerbahce. Galatasaray lost twice – in the second round of the championship (1:2) and in the semi-finals of the Cup of the country. Moreover, the cup match turned out to be incredible: Galatasaray opened the scoring, then conceded three goals in a row, managed to escape defeat, losing 2:4 six minutes before the end of the meeting, but lost in the penalty shootout. And the only positive result in the confrontation is a draw in the first round match – 0:0. As a result, Galatasaray finished in second place in the championship, losing three points just to Fenerbahce.

Things went better the next season. Galatasaray and Fenerbahce exchanged home victories: in the first round they won the team of Lucescu (2:0), in the second – the Canaries (1:0). Galatasaray won the championship, Fener finished second, three points behind the winner. Well, we note that at that time the Brazilian midfielder Batista played for Lucescu in Galatasaray, whom Mircea would invite to Shakhtar in 2004, the transfer cost three million euros, but the midfielder would not be able to gain a foothold in Donetsk.

Besiktas: two wins, a draw and a defeat

Lucescu played more successfully with Fenerbahce in the next two seasons, during which he headed Besiktas. In the 2002/2003 championship, Lucescu won both matches against the Canaries: away (1:0) and home (2:0). And in general, the Orly championship with the Romanian specialist was confident, finishing in first position. Fenerbahce finished the season sixth, 34 points behind the champion.

The Canaries took revenge in the next championship, taking another title. Besikstas Lucescu finished third, 14 points behind the champion. At the same time, the Eagles did not win against Fenerbahce in head-to-head matches: a draw away – 2:2 and a defeat at home – 1:3.

Shakhtar: win and draw

With the Pitmen, Lucescu also crossed paths with Fenerbahce in the Champions League qualification. True, in the third round of the 2015/2016 season. In the first match, held in Istanbul, the teams managed without goals scored – 0:0. In the second, Shakhtar was stronger, having obtained a 3-0 clean sheet thanks to goals from Gladkyy, Srna and Teixeira.

And yes, Shakhtar played the home match in Lvov – then Russia’s aggression against Ukraine had already begun, however, it took place under the guise of separatists, and Donetsk was occupied as part of the so-called DPR.

Bonus: Dynamo vs Fenerbahce

In their history, the white-blues met Fenerbahce five times: four matches were official (moreover, all in the Champions League), one was friendly. Dynamo have two wins, three meetings ended in a draw.

In the 2008/2009 season, Dynamo and Fenerbahce crossed paths in the Champions League group. The White-Blues drew away with Fener – 0:0 and won in Istanbul – 1:0, thanks to Eremenko’s goal.

In the Champions League qualification of the 2006/2007 season, the white and blue beat the Canaries at home 3:1 in the third round, thanks to Rincon’s double and Yussuf’s goal, and in Istanbul Shatsky’s double helped to defend a draw – 2:2.

In August last year, Dynamo and Fenerbahce did not reveal the strongest in a friendly match in Istanbul – a 1-1 draw, Lednev scored a goal for the people of Kiev. Mircea Lucescu was in charge of Dynamo.
